Listen now on:
In the world Trunkworthy is trying to create, it wouldn’t take Jimmy Scott’s death to get people talking about what he gave us in life. Though the details of his life story are fascinating (and beautifully recounted in his perfectly-named biography), in some cases and in some circles, they took the focus away from the purity and artistry of his beguiling gifts. Come to his music knowing nothing of the man, and he remains a jazz singer without equal, who treated time and tempos like taffy that he could stretch and mold to convey emotions no lyrics could.
If you’ve never heard Jimmy, start here, with the song “Day By Day” from his album, The Source. He’ll grab you with the first sounds out of his mouth, but if you’re not moved, not trembling by the time he blows the final, cathartic words from his lungs at the song’s close, there’s probably nothing else we can do to show the loss music itself suffered with his passing.
